Capella Space is an space company at the forefront of developing advanced space-based radar Earth observation satellites. Equipped with synthetic-aperture radar technology capable of penetrating clouds and operating during nighttime, these satellites offer unparalleled imaging capabilities.
Capella's primary objective is to deploy a constellation of small radar satellites designed to provide regular updates of high-quality imagery to both the U.S. government and commercial customers. To accomplish this, the company is actively working on building and launching an initial set of seven satellites known as the "Whitney-class." These satellites offer exceptional resolution and radar imaging capabilities.
The journey began with the successful launch of the first Whitney satellite, named Sequoia, in August 2020. Subsequently, six more Whitney satellites were launched between January 2021 and January 2022 through SpaceX Transporter rideshare missions, placing them into a polar sun-synchronous orbit.
Following the deployment of the seven Whitney-class satellites, Capella Space will evaluate market demand to determine the necessity of launching additional satellites. This adaptive approach ensures that the company can meet the evolving needs of its customers while providing the most up-to-date radar imagery possible.
