The European Space Agency (ESA) is an intergovernmental organization dedicated to the exploration of space. Founded in 1975, ESA has its headquarters in Paris and employs around 2,200 people globally. The agency is composed of 22 member states and is committed to shaping the development of Europe’s space capability. ESA’s mission is to ensure that investment in space delivers benefits to the citizens of Europe and the world.

The agency develops the launchers, spacecraft, and ground facilities needed to keep Europe at the forefront of global space activities. Today, it launches satellites for Earth observation, navigation, telecommunications, and astronomy, sends probes to the far reaches of the Solar System, and cooperates in the human exploration of space.

In its present structure, the European Space Agency (ESA) was established in 1975 through the amalgamation of ELDO and ESRO. The organization had ten founding members, namely Belgium, Germany, Denmark, France, the United Kingdom, Italy, the Netherlands, Sweden, Switzerland, and Spain.
