In a move set to transform the digital heart of India, Google has unveiled a monumental $6 billion investment to build a 1-gigawatt data center in the coastal city of Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh. This is not just Google’s first major data center project in India—it’s the largest in Asia in both capacity and capital spent, signaling how critical India’s digital economy has become for global tech giants.
Visakhapatnam’s strategic coastal location offers direct access to undersea cable landing stations, an absolute gamechanger for low-latency, high-throughput connections. Andhra Pradesh officials have promised the rollout of three new cable landing stations—set to double Mumbai’s existing cable capacity—putting Vizag on the map as a digital gateway between India and the world.
The state government’s aggressive vision is clear: since losing Hyderabad in 2014, Andhra Pradesh has set a goal to achieve 6 gigawatts of total data center capacity within five years—up from nearly zero today. With 1.6 GW already secured, this high-tech push is supported by favorable policies, concessional land rates, tax benefits, and enhanced green infrastructure.
Sustainability sits at the heart of the project. A stunning $2 billion will be invested in renewable energy, primarily solar and wind, to power this massive operation. This unique approach advances both Google’s goal of carbon-free operations and Andhra’s ambition to lead with green energy, even as coal-based power remains a necessary backup for 24×7 reliability.
The move is timely, as India’s data centers are seeing power demand soar—expected to reach 10 GW in five years. Google’s hybrid power strategy blends reliability with environmental ambition, setting new standards for hyperscale infrastructure in the region.
India’s data center market is experiencing explosive growth, with capacity forecasted to jump from 1.3 gigawatts today to more than 10 gigawatts by 2030—and revenues potentially tripling within the next six years. Hyperscale players (Amazon, Microsoft, Adani Group) are rapidly scaling their presence, but Google’s Visakhapatnam hub secures it a first-mover advantage with superior regulatory access and interconnection.
Crucially, this facility will empower India’s AI ecosystem, enabling on-premises deployment of advanced models like Google Gemini and supporting startups as well as big enterprises with ultra-fast, local AI processing and data storage. Thousands of direct and indirect jobs are expected to follow, stimulating innovation and regional economic growth.
Google’s mega investment isn’t just about servers and storage—it’s the launchpad for India’s emergence as a global digital leader.
