CisLunar Industries, a technology innovator based in Denver, has secured $1 million in seed funding from the Colorado ONE Fund, marking a pivotal moment for space power infrastructure. This latest investment is set to fuel CisLunar’s transition from niche hardware creator to large-volume manufacturer of its power processing units (PPUs), a leap that could accelerate the growth of commercial and defense space markets.
A PPU plays a central role in satellite operations, sitting between the satellite’s energy source—solar panels, nuclear generators, or batteries—and its critical components. Its job: to systematically manage and regulate the flow of electricity onboard, ensuring everything from scientific instruments to propulsion systems runs smoothly, with no risk of overload or failure.
CisLunar originally developed its PPU technology for ambitious in-space metal recycling efforts, requiring robust power management for high-energy tasks. Over time, these units became essential for high-demand applications like Hall-effect thrusters—a propulsion system seeing increased adoption among commercial satellite operators.
Historically, CisLunar has focused on small-batch production for research and aerospace grants, but this new investment will enable a rapid ramp-up. Their goal is clear: produce “tens of PPUs per month” as early as next year, addressing a critical bottleneck for satellite manufacturers seeking reliable, high-power hardware at scale.
PPU failures are a known Achilles’ heel in satellite missions—one that industry leaders are eager to solve. “That’s why some companies are willing to fly our hardware even before we’ve been able to fly it ourselves,” said CEO Gary Calnan, highlighting the high demand for proven, ready-made solutions.
CisLunar’s tech isn’t stuck on the drawing board. The company flew components on two missions with Think Orbital last year, and another demonstration with Momentus is scheduled for February, showcasing their PPUs in orbit-ready environments. Many customers, initially planning to build their own power units, returned to CisLunar upon realizing the complexity and cost involved in developing reliable in-house solutions.
The rapid evolution of industries like in-space manufacturing, resource extraction, power generation, and nuclear propulsion is pushing the limits of what satellites need from their power systems. By 2030, satellites’ total power generation needs are expected to reach 840 megawatts annually, representing a massive market for robust energy regulation technologies.
CisLunar Industries is positioning itself to be a central enabler for this growing ecosystem, building out the fundamental hardware expected to underpin tomorrow’s expanded orbital economy.
